Description

Founded in 1915 by Mario Bonete, Bodegas Piqueras was one of the driving forces behind the creation of Almansa DO. (100 kilometres inland from Valencia) Today, Mario's sons look after the estate, with the goal of producing eminent wines at fantastic prices. The estate is situated at 700-800 metres altitude with an extreme continental climate, low rainfall and limestone-rich soil and managed using organic farming methods (official certification will be finalized this year)…. Perfect conditions for  low yielding, slow ripening vines which produce rich, ripe, bold red wines of excellent concentration and quality.

2 x Valcanto Syrah 2013

awarded 93/200 POints: Sam Kim Wine Orbit

Awarded Metro Top 50 Wines

“One of the best value producers I’ve discovered in my 28 years in the industry.” – Steve Bennett Master of Wine, Importer.

“It is superbly ripe and opulent on the nose showing dark fruit, smoked meat, vanilla and toasted hazel nut characters with a hint of earthy/savoury notes. The palate delivers excellent fruit weight and concentration, and offers velvety texture and plush mouthfeel. A delectable, mouth-filling syrah with seductive savoury undertones. At its best: now to 2018.” Sam Kim Wine Orbit

This Spanish wine is the best-value Syrah I have tasted in years. Dark-fruited, with blackberry, chocolate and sweet juicy characters generous but round tannins and moderate acidity. A genuinely ripe style not overburdened with oak, fleshy and generous yet finishing dry which would make it a great accompaniment to grilled meat.” Paul Tudor, MW, Metro Magazine's Top 50 Wines

Sourced from hand-harvested, 25-30 year-old, organically-farmed vines grown at 700-800m above sea level in calcareous, stony soils. Valcanto is a pure, intense, elegant expression of Syrah with delicious, natural acidity and is aged in fine-grained 300l American oak hogsheads for 6 months to give a gentle, creamy texture

2 x Valcanto Monastrell 2013

awarded gold medal: Beliner Wein Trophy

100% old vine Monastrell (Mourvedre), Southern Spain’s signature grape variety. Aged 6 months in 500l French Allier fine-grain oak casks.  Rich, deep-coloured red with distinctive aromas of black plums, blueberries, blackberries, liquorice, and pepper that lead to a balanced, well-structured wine with layers of fruit, subtle spices and tannins and a medium-long, powerful and lingering finish with clean acidity. Able to partner the richest meat dishes.

2 x Valcanto Garnacha Tintorera 2013

awarded gold medal: Beliner Wein Trophy

Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouschet) is a ‘teinturier’ grape variety with red flesh as well as dark skins. It is sought out by wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs for its amazing colour intensity and strong cherry, cassis, dark chocolate and black pepper characters backed up by a lush texture. This excellent example is juicy and plush with polished tannins. Enjoy this juicy red on its own or with roasted or grilled red meat and cheese dishes.
