Description

Yellow-gold in colour. Rich and inviting on the nose with peach and rockmelon fruits flowing through to an expanse of elderflower, wild fennel and cloves. Similar flow through the palate with nectarine, preserved lemon, baking spices and the smoke of Manuka wood. Beautiful intensity, length and generously layered.

Organically produced, James Hardwick Riesling is grown on deep clay soils which rarely need irrigation.   The vines were planted in the early 1990’s and are cuttings from the original Waipara Riesling planted in the 1980’s.  Planted with wide spacing, common for that time (3m x 1.8m), and on own roots, the fruit gives a true expression of site.   Carefully tended by hand, the vines naturally produce small quantities of fruit and little fruit removal is required to achieve balance. A mix of clean and Botrytis fruit was 100% hand-picked in the cool early mornings and delivered to the winery.

Whole bunch pressed and settled without Sulphur or fining. The juice was racked two days after harvesting and left in tank at ambient cellar temperature to begin natural fermentation. The juice fermented for 10 months on full yeast lees, to the ebb and flow of temperatures surrounding the tank. The result is a complex, detailed wine in an off-dry style, which was lightly Sulphured and filtered before estate bottling.
