"Medium-bodied, organic, fruity red with red berries, raspberry, violet, spice, anise and cedar-wood flavours. A dry, supple and slightly rustic wine in an easy-drinking style. Good value at this price" Bob Campbell, Master of Wine, Real Review, Sep 2021
Garnacha Tintorera characteristically has a vibrant deep colour with rich aromas of cassis, sweet strawberries and raspberries and sage. On the palate, this medium-bodied red wine is full of lingering flavours of ripe plums, black pepper and herbs. It is juicy and plush with polished tannins.
Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouschet) is a ‘teinturier’ grape variety with dark purple flesh as well as dark skins indigenous to the D.O.P. Almansa wine region. It is sought out by wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs for its amazing colour intensity and strong cherry, cassis, dark chocolate and black pepper characters backed up by a lush texture.
For this wine 25-60-year-old dry-farmed trellised and bush vines grown at 700-800m metres altitude organic farming methods (Certified Ecológico). Grapes are hand harvested during the last week of September and first week of October selecting the best small bunches at optimum ripeness.
Continuous maceration at 25ºC for 2 weeks to preserve the primary aromas of the fruit and not to extract too much tannin on the palate. The wine is part aged in stainless steel and part for 6 months in fine grain, medium toasted American barrels (300 L) then bottled relatively early to preserve the wine’s distinctive varietal identity and sense of place.
“El Abuelo” means “The Grandfather”. Family owned, this is the fourth generation of the Piqueras family to have overseen the property since it was established in 1915 in Almansa, south-east Spain, (100 kilometres inland from Valencia) and the Mediterranean Sea. The region is characterized by its low rainfall and poor, low-fertility limestone soils which are organically farmed high above above sea level. The wines are incredibly intense and represent fantastic value and are exported to over 40 countries around the world.
Food Pairing: Enjoy this smooth red on its own or with grilled, roasted or fried dishes, barbecued red meats, rice dishes, cured salted meats (jamón, chorizo, etc.) and mild cheese. Best served at 16-18 °C.
