Mundus Vini Summer Tasting, 2021

Description

  • American & French oak
  • Ripe fig & mango
  • Toasted almond
  • Creamy butterscotch

"This is splendidly fruited and lifted on the nose showing apricot, baked fig, vanilla and roasted hazelnut characters with a hint of lemon zest. The succulent palate offers excellent weight and rich texture, well complemented by refreshing acidity, finishing creamy and lingering. At its best: now to 2024" Sam Km, Wine Orbit, Jun 2021

The 2020 vintage boasts a complex structure with finesse. This full-bodied Chardonnay offers suave aromas nuanced with delicate white summer flowers, toasted almond and a hint of whiskey barrel. Flavors of ripe fig, mango, lightly roasted marshmallow and sliced pear segue to a creamy butterscotch finish balanced by a natural acidity. Charming and charismatic.

The 2020 growing season was ideal for producing high quality, elegant and expressive wines. Fruit development – from bud break through berry set – progressed at an even pace, allowing the resulting wine to be packed with brilliant, concentrated flavors.

Lodi has been grape growing since the 1850s and in most places, the soil is deep loam which is similar to that of the French Rhône region of Châteauneuf du Pape. The gently rolling golden hills of the region are exposed to the high heat of the afternoon sun, producing an opulent and full-bodied Chardonnay. The soil is also low on water retention leaving the vines stressed which leads to intensity of flavor and a brilliant acidity. Most of the grapes for Three Finger Jack come from here in Lodi, located at the base of the Sierra foothills. The appellation has a classic Mediterranean-like climate featuring warm days and cool evenings. Situated 100 miles directly east of the San Francisco Bay at the edge of the San Joaquin/Sacramento River Delta, cool “delta breezes” provide the region with a reliable, natural air conditioning throughout the growing season.

Optimal picking for the Chardonnay that goes into the blend is a combination of Winemaker evaluation, vineyard condition and a weather eye. Chardonnay is picked based upon proper flavor ripeness, harvested in the cool of the night and delivered to the Winery to be destemmed into fermentation tanks. It then spends 24-48 hours slowly warming up to proper fermentation temperature. Most of the Chardonnay for this blend was fermented on oak with the greater portion being French and the balance on American oak. A variety of specially selected toast levels for the oak were used along with sur-lie aging to give the wine richness and fatness. The wine is racked off oak at an appropriate time to retain brightness and freshness of this varietal, allowing the Winemaker to craft their signature style.
