"As usual, the 2017 RunRig is approximately 2% Viognier. It spent almost 30 months in oak, 40% of which was new. Hints of peach or apricot appear on the nose, alongside notes of hickory smoke, cherries and baking spices. It’s full-bodied and concentrated but supple and silky enough to seem lighter in the mouth, showing tremendous length and elegance on the finish, where it adds nuances of cinnamon and cocoa" Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate, Nov 2019
"Deep, dark red/purple colour and a restrained, dark-fruited and faintly herbal bouquet. Black fruits and licorice. The wine is big and rich, fleshy and dense, with great concentration and extract yet also elegant structure. It’s deliciously fruitsweet at the centre and then cleansing tannins dry the finish, which is very long. Superb ripeness. A very smart vintage of RunRig" Huon Hooke, Real Review, Nov 2020
This Australian Shiraz is crimson in colour with deep purple hues. Intense, lifted aromatics of dense blueberries and blackberries with dark chocolate all come to the fore with an opulnet profile of mulberry, plum and five-spice. A plush and velvety textured palate of red cherry and stonefruits with clove all interwoven with hints of dark chocolate.
It is an assemblage from 6 vineyards. Shiraz from old dry grown Barossa vineyards is blended with Viognier, complementing the strengths and complexities of these individual parcels of fruit, whilst giving the resulting wine a further dimension. Although wonderfully aromatic, RunRig also exhibits a power and latent richness making it more akin to the hugely concentrated wines sourced from the sun drenched hill of Hermitage – the historic home of Syrah and some of the world’s most powerful and longest living wines.
After a cold and rainy winter in 2016, the Barossa had one of its wettest springs on record, replenishing sub-soil moisture and setting the vineyards up for a healthy summer. Mild conditions during veraison and light rains in January and February 2017, were followed by an extended warm, dry Indian summer, creating perfect ripening conditions through to April 2017. An outstanding vintage producing bright, aromatic whites and intense, well-structured reds.
Matured for 30 months on new (50%), second fill and third fill French oak barriques, completing a natural malolactic fermentation in barrel and resting on fine lees throughout maturation to enhance texture.
