Description

  • Seasoned oak
  • Red berries
  • Dried herbs
  • Fine tannins

"Charming and elegantly lifted, the wine shows sweet cherry, toasted spice, walnut and subtle game characters on the nose, leading to a finely textured palate that delivers bright fruit flavours combined with savoury nuances, finishing long and delicately dry. A lovely expression. At its best: now to 2024" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Sep 2020

"Chianti, from the heart of Tuscany, is one of the world’s classic wine regions. It’s warm Tuscan climate matched up with Italy’s favourite grape, sangiovese, is a magical combination making both wines for everyday drinking, as well as wines that can drink well for decades. Here we have a bright and fresh version that explodes with local character. There are bright red cherry and cranberry fruits plus old tobacco and terracotta adding plenty of depth and complexity. It is then dry and mid-weight with zippy acidity and some sandy tannins too that help to draw out a lingering finish. A super introduction to Chianti and a tasty version for everyday drinking, especially with some hard cheese and parma ham" Angus Hughson, Wine Pilot, Sep 2020

"Such good packaging. It should win awards. The first duty of entry level Chianti is to be refreshing, and good with food, and this ticks those boxes very nicely. Red berries, black olive and dried herb, and almond paste. It’s crisp and fresh, good flavour, but not too much, a subtly rustic undertone, and a solid finish, all red fruits and almond closes it out. Nails it. You just want to drink the hell out of it" Gary Walsh, Wine Front, Aug 2020

"From the team at Fourth Wave Wine comes a number made with fruit grown in the Chianti Rufina and satisfying the rules for DOCG classification. Bottled under screwcap. Winemaker is Giovani Busi. Note, bottle image is of 2018, but nought else as changed. Slightly soupy complexion, rustic nose of macerating cherry, ageing rose petals, brambly herb garden, red apple and a touch of rusticity coming through. Medium bodied palate with easy light red summer fruits, little rumbles of fine tannin, a little tart acidity and a clean finish. Simple on its own, but perfect with any sort of tomato based pasta sauce or salami platter" Regan Drew, Vino Notebook, Oct 2020

Chianti at its fragrant best. An amalgam of red berries and black olive complemented by dried herbs adding savoury edge. Fresh and bright palate weight with fine grain tannins that ensures it ends dry. Great drinkability.

Chianti remains one of the most lauded and long-lived wine regions in Italy specialising in the variety Sangiovese. This wine is sourced from a small grower in Chianti Rufina one of the highest and coolest parts of the region resulting in wines that are quite granite rich with a mineral edge and fine acidity. Whilst the majority of the region’s vineyard owners still sell their fruit to large wineries and co-operatives, an increasing number are opting to make small amounts of wine themselves, selling directly under their own label such as Maretti.

A good follow up to lauded 2018 vintage in the region. The growing season was regular with no extreme weather events leading to normal picking times and fruit in great quality. Harvest looked healthy and with bigger yields than the previous vintage. Another good year for Chianti.

Traditionally vinified in small open stainless-steel fermenters, controlled to twenty-six degrees, and hand plunged daily with fermentation lasting fifteen days. Following fermentation the wine is aged for just over twelve months in large seasoned (2,000 litres) oak casks before bottling and a further six months maturation before release.

Food Pairing: Stablemate for a home-made Lasagne or Pappardelle with mushrooms.
