Description

  • French oak
  • Stonefruit
  • Almond butter & brioche
  • Creamy mouthfeel

"A stunning rendition of the variety; the gorgeously complex bouquet shows rockmelon, fresh fig, nougat and cedar characters with a hint of oatmeal complexity. It's concentrated and wonderfully weighted on the palate, displaying flowing mouthfeel and creamy texture, brilliantly structured by bright acidity. Splendidly composed and exquisitely styled. At its best: now to 2027" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Jan 2021

"Attractively rich and flavoursome chardonnay with grapefruit, tree fruit, oyster-shell, mineral, toast, brioche and subtle oak flavours. The wine has appealing purity and power with a lingering finish. Good now, even better in a few years" Bob Campbell, Master of Wine, Real Review, Jan 2021

"Complex and engaging with subtle layers of oak and minerality weaving through layers of ripe, fresh orchard fruits. On the palate - silky, fresh, youthful, varietal and fruity. Almost full-bodied with a smooth texture, contrasting flavours of oak accentuated with acidity and youthful energy. A lovely wine ready to enjoy upon purchase and through 2025+. Will also cellar well developing more complexity and length - best from 2022 through 2025+"  Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier

"Bright, light straw-yellow with some depth and a gold hue, slightly lighter edged. The nose is full, elegantly penetrating stonefruit nuances melded with a citrus backbone, stony minerals crunch, spices and flint. Medium-bodied, bright aromas of lemon sherbet, lemon curd, along with grapefruit, white peaches integrated with subtle flinty spice and pine nut, unveiling stony minerals drives a lingering finish. The electric acid drive provides good energy and freshness; subtle creaminess rounded out the mouthfeel to a smooth lemon curd texture. This is an elegant Chardonnay with a brilliant acid line and mineral drive. Match with pan-fried turbot and crayfish sashimi over the next 5+ years. Predominantly from 25 years old vines in Wairau & Southern Valley, Clones Mendoza, B95 and 15. Handpicked, whole bunch pressed, wild-fermented to 13% alc, aged 11 months in a 4,500L French oak cuve and a concrete egg tank. Full MLF, unfined, unfiltered. Vegan friendly" Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Reviews, Jan 2021

"A lovely medium golden colour with delicious aromas of toasted oak, peach, ripe nectarine, grapefruit, and fresh red apple with vanilla undertones. A soft, supple mouth feel with flavours of stone fruit, apple, and oak derived spices. The finish is outstanding, a zing of citrusy acidity leads to a long, lingering, and slightly creamy conclusion" Angie Atkinson, The Wine Writer

"From two sites, in the Wairau Valley and Southern Valleys, the highly attractive 2019 vintage (5*) was hand-picked (mostly from 25 year-old vines), and fermented and matured for 11 months in French oak cuves and a concrete egg tank. Bright, light yellow/green, it is a distinctive wine, already delicious, with strong, vibrant, peachy, complex flavours, fresh acidity, and excellent depth and harmony. Best drinking 2023+" Michael Cooper

Bright lemon in colour, the bouquet offers aromas of almond blossom and stone fruit mingled with a touch of struck match. On the palate the wine is bright and focused, opening up to layers of white peach and nectarine, over flavours of almond butter, minerals and spice. The artisan winemaking approach has resulted in a classic and elegant chardonnay, showing great poise, purity of fruit and a waxy finish.

Clos des Pierres is French for 'place of stones' and gives reference to The Spring Vineyard which has extremely stony soils. Predominately from 25 year old vines, the fruit for this wine was hand harvested, lightly whole bunch pressed and naturally fermented. The wine was then aged for 11 months in a 4,500L French oak cuve and a concrete egg tank. Full malolactic fermentation occurred. In pursuit of the highest quality, we have not filtered this wine. As a result a harmless residue may remain.
