Description

  • Dry style
  • Honey
  • Toasty & nutty
  • Crisp & refreshing

"Made using semillon from their 33-year-old vines, fermented with indigenous yeasts then aged on lees in oak barrels for 2.5 years, with a touch of chardonnay, muscat gewürztraminer. The bouquet is impressively complex and fragrant, showing grapefruit, baked apple, golden peach, beeswax and toasted nut characters with a whiff of gun smoke. It is concentrated and wonderfully weighted on the palate, delivering rich texture, expansive mouthfeel and bright acidity, finishing long and attractively savoury" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, May 2019

"A new and moderately adventurous label from Pegasus Bay that's a blend of semillon aged for more than two years in old barrel with chardonnay, muscat and gewürztraminer. A flavoursome dry white that's richly-textured and quite complex. More savoury or perhaps vinous than fruity. I like it" Bob Campbell, Master of Wine, Real Review, Apr 2019

"Brilliantly bright, straw-yellow with a lime hue, even colour throughout. The nose is inviting, well-packed aromas of chamomile, orange blossom and gunflint, melded with zesty citrus fruit, honey nuanced and a dusting of spices. Medium-bodied, flavours of an amalgam of citrus zest, interweave honey, jasmine tea, along with fragrant floral notes, lingers with gunflint details. The wine has lovely intensity and concentration, providing both weight and breath to the palate. The mouthfeel is unctuous and textural, flows smoothly with positive energy and drive, supported by lacy acidity, lingers to a long, sustained finish. This is a textural white blend with intense flavour concentration, a complex range of interest on a positive flow with flinty details. Match with Chinese crispy pork belly and smoked warehou over the next 3-5 years. Predominant ultra-ripe old vines Semillon, blended with Muscat, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurztraminer and Chardonnay. Different fermentation and maturation techniques applied, including skin contact and lees ageing for some portions" Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Reviews, Sep 2020

"It's predominately Semillon, aged for 2 years in barel before being blended with a splash of gewürztraminer, chardonnay and muscat to produce a prickly-fresh, floral-edged, dried herb and hayscented wine with a rich, spicy, funky core and a long, lip-puckering finish" Yvonne Lorkin, Apr 2019

Here at Pegasus Bay they've been experimenting with Semillon for years, so it felt appropriate to use this variety as the core of their first Vergence white. Ultra-ripe Semillon from their 33 year old vines was fermented naturally with its solids to add some funky complexity, and then aged on lees in old oak barrels for 2 ½ years. A touch of Chardonnay, Muscat and Gewurztraminer were also included in the final blend to add aromatics and balance.

The longer than usual period in oak has given this wine a toasty and nutty character, with extra richness on the palate. There are also hints of citrus blossom and some floral notes. Skin contact during the fermentation has added savouriness, however the wine still has crisp acidity that provides for a lively and refreshing finish. A full bodied and complex wine, not for the faint hearted or unadventurous!

The Donaldson Family have been seriously involved in viticulture and winemaking for over 40 years. Founder Ivan Donaldson planted the first Canterbury vineyard in 1976 and went on to establish Pegasus Bay in 1986 with his wife Christine. It is a true family business, with all four of their sons and two spouses involved, managing various aspects.

Vergence is when the pupils of the eyes look outwards, in opposite directions, before focusing. Wine made under this label will first and foremost be delicious, while also reflecting our commitment to constantly evolving their wine styles. Keeping an open mind is essential for progress and at times this this means looking outside the square, even when it’s untraditional, experimental or down right quirky. The composition of these wines may well change from vintage to vintage, either way you can be sure they have not been made looking straight.

This wine has an ageing potential of 7+ years.
