Description

  • American oak
  • Black Doris plum
  • Vanilla & cedar spice
  • Plump & succulent

"It's gorgeously ripe and sweetly expressed on the nose showing Black Doris plum, raspberry, vanilla and cedar characters with a touch of spicy nuance. The palate delivers excellent weight and fruit intensity, together with plump mouthfeel and silky texture, leading to a lengthy delectable finish. At its best: now to 2025" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Sep 2020

Deep purple colour with aromatic notes of red berry and blackcurrants framed by violet and enticing cedarwood spice. The palate is dense and plush with flavours of blueberry and spice with a supple, slippery mouthfeel framed by subtle oak to impart a fine toast. A generous wine, packed full of flavour that is ready to drink now or will cellar for up to 5 years.

Sourced from established, low-yielding and dry-grown vineyards in Langhorne Creek and McLaren Vale vineyards managed by Jim.

Notably dry with minimal rain. Rainfall was below average through spring, summer and into harvest. This meant local producers had to ensure irrigation was used to sustain their crops. As a result, yields were down but the best growers and vignerons were pleased with the quality.

Sourced from a selection of mature, dry-grown vineyards in Langhorne Creek managed by Jim Zerella. The fruit is hand-harvested and vineyard sorted before de-stemming and a traditional vinification in small two and three tonne open fermenters with regular hand plunging before partial maturation in three hundred litre, high toast American oak “black barrels” for six months.

Black Barrel is Nicholas Crampton and Jim Zerella’s take on proudly traditional, full bodied wines with barrel aged complexity using the classic combination of old-vine vineyards, traditional open fermenters and partial maturation in high toast “black barrels”.
