Description

  • French oak
  • Blackberry & blueberry
  • Coffee & chocolate
  • Silky tannins

"Deep, rich red colour with a tint of purple, the bouquet rich and ripe, decadently rich and concentrated but not over the top. It has some elegance and very good balance. A big, soft, silky wine with a lot of old-vine concentration and supple texture. Sheer class. (From a single estate vineyard planted in 1893)" Huon Hooke, Real Review, May 2019

A dark purple red with a garnet edge in the glass, this wine presents fresh and fruit driven aromas of blackberries, raspberries, blueberries and cherries. A combination of forest fruits with blackberries and mulberries decorate the palate, as well as savoury, aromatic spices of anise and nutmeg, with some coffee and chocolate notes. Tannins are silky and delicate, with a good acidity and well balanced finish.

Fruit was hand-picked and sourced from Shiraz vines planted in 1893. The Old Bastard Shiraz ages beautifully, with the berry notes becoming more prominent over time. It has decades to give, cellar up to 20+ years.

Fruit was hand-picked and sourced from Shiraz vines planted in 1893. Matured in 35% new and the remainder in 1 year old French oak. The wine making procedure is a closely guarded secret, with innovative techniques as yet revealed to new world wine. But what we can tell you, is it was harvested by hand at the crack of dawn, when there was enough light shinning through the crystals, looking like an amazing rainbow across the small vineyard.

The Old Bastard Shiraz is the essence of the Barossa Valley and is a true testament to the history, soils and place that is the Barossa. The oldest vineyards in the Old Vine Trio, with planted in 1893, the Kaesler Old Bastard Shiraz is one of Australia’s most collected wines and is considered a benchmark for premium Barossa Shiraz around the world.
