Description

  • Blackcurrant & plum
  • Vanilla & toasted nut
  • Succulent & grainy tannins

"This is beautifully fruited and delightfully perfumed on the nose showing blackcurrant, spiced plum, vanilla and toasted nut characters with a hint of tobacco. It’s succulent and wonderfully weighted on the palate, offering terrific fruit intensity backed by fine texture and grainy tannins, making it sturdy yet immediately appealing. At its best: now to 2027" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Jun 2020

A medium-bodied, Merlot dominant blend displaying blackberry, cassis and plum characters with a succulent texture and great finish. This is a true reflection of the Hawke’s Bay vineyards, and a great representation of the 2017 vintage. This wine can be enjoyed for a further 6 years from vintage.

The winemakers vineyards enjoy a temperate, dry climate and an extended growing season allowing them to grow wines that display wonderful fruit purity and elegance. Founded and owned by the German Weiss family, Elephant Hill is committed to crafting small volumes of world-class wines from its three unique vineyards in the Hawke’s Bay.

The 2017 Le Phant Rouge is a Hawke’s Bay red blend of 72% Merlot, 27% Syrah and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes were harvested from our Gimblett and Triangle Vineyards, carefully destemmed to open top cuves and fermented over a fourteen-day period. The wine went through malolactic fermentation in oak with minimal intervention for 12 months, 25% new French oak.
