"Concentrated, rich and slightly oily-textured riesling that gives a nod in the direction of Alsace with citrus, lime, apple, and a suggestion of white flowers and mineral character. An impressive wine at this price" Bob Campbell, Master of Wine, Real Review, Nov 2018
"Distinctive and alluring aromas of Riesling with apple, white apricot, lemon and white peach. Very floral too with white rose and jasmine scents. Crisp, refreshing and just dry on the palate with flavours that reflect the bouquet, high acidity adds crispness and vibrancy across the palate. Drink today and through 2028" Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier, Nov 2018
This Kiwi-style Riesling is a delicate off dry wine made in a deliciously juicy fruit driven style. Very pure, citrus/lime and subtle stonefruit flavours. Intense, concentrated and harmonious with that perfect balance of ripe fruit sweetness, fresh acidity, drying minerality and long long finish. Good today; but better many tomorrows hence.
The grapes for this Mystery Riesling are grown on two distinctly different sites. One site providing gravel rich, free draining and devigourating soil profile, giving citrus flavours, fine acidity, low pH and most interestingly an amazing minerality The other, on geologically older soil of crushed rock mixed with a portion of clay, gives a much more exotic fruit flavour profile – stone fruit, citrus, spice and a distinctive “biscuity” minerality.
Vintage 2017 provided a challenge for the Marlborough Region, with a cooler than normal summer ripening season and then some extreme rainfall events at peak ripening time. Most of all, this vintage showed great winemaking decisions. Many wineries saw the weather warnings and got into the harvest; noting ripe flavours at lower sugar levels, meaning the resulting wines, while 0.5% lower in alcohol, are still rich and flavourful. With the ability to react quickly to a changing weather situation we were able to bring in 95% of the vintage before the first of the rain. Beth and John were out tasting the vineyards and with flavour development coming on at lower sugars it seemed there was nothing to wait for! The finished wines look great; flavourful, fresh and definitely showing finesse!
