Description

  • French oak
  • Sweet plum
  • Spiced cherry
  • Fine, grainy tannins

"Still youthful, the 2016 vintage (5*) was estate-grown at Rapaura, hand-harvested, and fermented and lees-aged for eight months. Fresh and full-bodied, it is vibrantly fruity, with concentrated, peachy, slightly spicy flavours, showing good complexity, and a dry (2 grams/litre of residual sugar) finish. Best drinking mid-2020+" Michael Cooper, Sep 2019

"A cooler style of syrah with delicacy and a pleasing floral aroma that continues onto the palate. A supple, savoury wine with anise, spice, red and dark berry and a seasoning of fresh herbs" Bob Campbell, Master of Wine, Real Review, Jan 2019

"An elegant rendition; the bouquet shows lovely ripe fruit notes of sweet plum and spiced cherry together with smoked game and cedar characters. The palate is succulent and plump, displaying attractive fruit intensity and roundness, backed by fine, grainy tannins" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Feb 2019

This 2015 vintage Staete Landt Syrah expresses the unique terroir of the old stony riverbed site beautifully. The wine has an attractive nose of ripe black cherries and blackberries. On the palate this wine shows spice, white pepper, dark ripe plums and bay leaf/liquorice characters. A well-balanced, complex and sophisticated typical cool climate style Syrah, with excellent structure and elegant tannins. Cellar up to 7 years.

The Staete Landt vineyard, situated on the old riverbed soils in the Rapaura region in Marlborough experienced a mild spring through most of the flowering period. Giving us a generous crop size and a good amount of bunches. At this stage we did an initial shoot & bunch removal. The 2015 summer stayed dry & warm through veraison all the way into harvest. Luckily at veraison we further selected the bunches we really liked and thinned out the rest. All this weather was unusually well suited for a great Syrah harvest.

The Staete Landt Syrah vines were planted in 2005; two blocks on the hottest site in the vineyard, with big riverstones under the vines to suck up the sunlight and add further warmth to the ground. The 2 blocks comprise three different clones; Syrah 470, Chaves and the Old Clone, spread over 2 rootstocks: Riparia Gloire and 3309. Each parcel expresses a different flavour profile and tannin structure, ensuring various interesting components for the final Syrah blend.

Limpid plum red with aromas of damson, leather, and rock flour; savoury yet fragrant. Black cherry, pepper, and more stony notes on the palate; finesse and harmony although the toasty oak seemed a little prominent at first. Ripe, concentrated, no greenness or tamarillo flavours yet lacking density. A non-grunty style of wine. A long finish that one could feel down the sides of one's mouth and throat.
