Description

  • Toasty oak
  • Ripe plum & mulberry
  • Peppery spice
  • Fine tannins

"Medium to deep youthful red/purple colour, the bouquet toasty, vanillan, earthy and mellow with wood-matured savouriness. It’s bright and firm in the mouth with abundant acidity and tight tannins, a bold youthful wine which would reward some more cellaring. It's bright and nervy, intense and savoury with ironstone and earth and hints of graphite. Very fine, tense, lingering aftertaste. A lovely wine, with future potential" Huon Hooke, Real Review, Jul 2019

"Medium purple-red and bright for age. Ripe plum, mulberry and blueberries, herbal notes with air, echoing its cooler region origins. Oak just a whisper in the background. There's no shortage of tannin, perhaps a function of rotofermenter extraction, and this should help it go age gracefully long term" James Halliday's Wine Companion 2019

Dark red with youthful purple hues in the glass. Dark fruit complemented by notes of toasty oak. An elegant palate of ripe plum and mulberry with a hint of peppery spice. Well-structured with stylish oak and fine tannins providing a lasting finish. Well structured with outstanding depth of fruit, this wine while drinking well now will continue to gain complexity and offers excellent cellaring potential.

This wine was made from fruit which was harvested at its optimum maturity. The wine was fermented for 7 days under controlled temperatures in a combination of rotary and static fermenters. Maturation for 14 months in small French and American oak barrels has assisted in the development of a wine that shows vibrancy and richness.

Coonawarra is renowned for its remarkable 'terra rossa' soil, a thin metre band of soil over laying a deep formation of limestone. The Zema family is proudly traditional in its approach to vineyard practices, favouring hand pruning and limited irrigation to maximise fruit quality. These practices are enhanced by the family's three strategically selected prime vineyard locations, capitalising on the regions subtle climatic variations.

The Zema family has been consistently producing exceptional hand crafted Coonawarra wines since 1982.

Food Pairing: Lamb chops, roast beef.
