Description

  • Subtle toasty oak
  • Blood plum
  • Spice notes
  • Fine tannins

"It's fabulously ripe and fragrant, showing mulberry, dark cherry, vanilla, toasted spice and hazelnut characters on the nose. The palate offers excellent fruit power backed by silky texture and supple tannins, making it very approachable and drinkable" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

"Negociants, French for merchants, have a long history, beginning in France's Burgundy area where they created fine wines from growers with grape output too small to warrant their own bottlings. That continues today as they buy grapes, bulk juice or finished wine to sell under their own brands. This 14.2%-alcohol, garnet-hued Langhorne Creek red is one of today's three Australian versions of the négociant system. It has rhubarb aromas, lively plum front-palate flavour, middle-palate Morello cherry, mint and licorice and toasty oak and a dusty tannin finish" John Lewis, The Newcastle Herald, Jun 2020

Deep purple colour with aromatic notes of red berry and blackcurrants framed by violet and enticing cedarwood spice. The palate is dense and plush with flavours of blood plum, blueberry and spice with a supple, slippery mouthfeel framed by subtle oak toast and fine tannins. A generous wine, packed full of flavour that is ready to drink now or will cellar for up to 10 years.

Sourced from a selection of mature, dry-grown vineyards in Langhorne Creek managed by Jim Zerella. The fruit is partially hand-harvested before de-stemming and cool fermentation in small two tonne open fermenters with regular hand plunging. Matured in seasoned French oak (20% new French) for six months before bottling with minimal filtration and sulphur addition.

Notably dry with minimal rain. Rainfall was below average through Spring, Summer and into harvest. This meant local producers had to ensure irrigation was used to sustain their crops. As a result, yields were down but the best growers and vignerons were pleased with the quality.

The Elephant in the Room wines are proudly large in scale and expansive in flavour. Ignoring fashion and braving the scorn of “wine thought police”, Elephant in the Room was created to give consumers exactly what they want – full bodied and mouth-filling wines that deliver maximum pleasure. Sourced from low yielding vineyards in Langhorne Creek and partially matured in French Oak before final blending and bottling by Corey Ryan.
