Description

  • Off-dry style
  • Juicy pear
  • Apple crumble
  • Clover honey

This single vineyard wine is mid-straw in colour with a slight copper tone. Off-dry in style with lifted aromas of juicy pears, red apples and stonefruit. The palate is weighty and textural with flavours of pears, apple crumble and clover honey – a complex wine that is drinking perfectly after three years in bottle.

The fruit for this wine came from just one pick from the Barnsley Block in the Waihopai Valley. Grower Biddy Barnsley pays great attention to the vineyard and particularly to this Pinot Gris. The vines were leaf-plucked and thinned numerous times to ensure the crop level was low, ensuring both flavour and full ripeness.

The winemaking here was minimalist. The grapes were hand-picked and gently pressed to old French oak barriques and allowed to ferment long and slow with wild yeasts from the vineyard. The fermentation took over six months. Once we felt the wine had achieved the perfect sugar balance, the barrels were racked and the wine was chilled, filtered and bottled.

Food Pairing: A delicious pairing with seafood, poultry, pasta and slightly spicy dishes.

Very nice wine but not dry enough for us in a Pinot Gris. This is a great wine for someone that prefers something a little sweeter than the drier Pinot Gris.
