Description

  • Off-dry style
  • Golden peach
  • Rich florals
  • Poached pear

"This is seriously good. Opulent and stylish, the wine shows golden peach, poached pear, spice and rich floral aromas on the nose, leading to a succulent palate that is wonderfully weighted and creamy. The wine offers layers of silky texture and expansive mouthfeel, enhanced with subtle sweetness, leading to an impressively long velvety finish. At its best: now to 2023" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Mar 2019

A Pinot Gris with generous richness, flavour concentration and length. The acidity is balanced perfectly with a slight sweetness. Drinking beautifully now or cellar up to five years.

The 2018 growing season was one of extremes with records set for significant rainfall in October and February balanced out by extreme heat in December and January. The two blocks this fruit comes from sits behind the cellar door on an old river terrace and is a mixture of silt and clay loam. Organically managed, the combination of undervine cultivation and longer irrigation cycles has driven the vine roots deep into the soil profile. Popular Pinot Gris clones 2/15 and 2/21 produce well on these soils. Careful bunch thinning means balanced yield and excellent quality. A small amount of botrytis was allowed to establish to add some complexity to the final wine.

Winemakers picked their two blocks of Pinot Gris separately early April. Each was pressed slowly over 4 hours before a light settle. Both bocks were fermented together in tank at cool temperatures through to a balanced off-dry style. A smaller portion was fermented in old French oak barrels and aged on full yeast lees for five months. Estate bottled without fining.
