Description

  • Smoky oak
  • Dark cherry
  • Toasted almonds
  • Ripe blackberries

"Complex and engaging, the gorgeously expressed bouquet shows dark cherry, plum, warm spice, dark mushroom and toasted nut characters with a hint of dried herb notes. The palate delivers excellent weight and roundness, wonderfully supported by silky mouthfeel and polished tannins. Beautifully balanced and harmonious with seductive complexity" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Aug 2019

"Creating our wines with minimal vineyard sprays and additives is very important to us as it helps us produce pure clean wines and has the added benefit of sustaining a healthy environment" Winemaker

Ripe blackberries, dark plums, raspberries, dark cherries & bitter chocolate combine with the delicate perfume of dried herbs ,smoky oak and almonds creating a wine of great depth & concentration.

This Central Otago Pinot Noir is hand picked from several vineyards in the Cromwell basin of Central Otago. Low yields of around 3-4 ton / acre and a dry Summer created perfect ripening conditions, March and April were dry and warm, and the low yielding crop ripened to optimum maturity, the berries were very small and concentrated this year giving extra concentration to the wine.

Hand picked fruit in the cool of morning the grapes are gently crushed into small open top fermenters, after up to one week cold maceration natural yeast fermentation took place with regular hand plunging. After 4-5 weeks on skins the wine was gently run off by gravity and the skins were gently pressed. The wine then underwent maturation in 228L French barriques in the traditional burgundy style. Full malolactic fermentation in barrique has softened the acidity and added complexity. The wine is aged in barrique for approx. 18 months & it was bottled unfiltered.

Gardo Morris is a small family-run boutique New Zealand Winery. Their aim is to create exceptional single vineyard wines from New Zealand’s finest winegrowing regions. They believe that by working with small vineyard areas they are able to pick the very best fruit and with gentle treatment in the winery turn this into unique handcrafted wines.

Food Pairing: Best to be served around 14 - 16°C perfect accompanied with wild game dishes such as venison, but this is an all round wine that will compliment any well prepared meat from duck to beef.

Carol - 14/03/2021

B
Very nice tasting Pinot value for the money

Brett - 20/02/2021

Dark plum and cherry, plenty of substance and dark colours for a Pinot. Ready to drink now which is an added bonus. Got better and better each day after decanter for several hours and vacuum cork at night. So not an 'old' Pinot that needs to be drunk quickly. 4.2

G

D
Good value central Otago pinot noir with some age in the bottle!

Derek - 05/12/2020

Interesting dense, tannic wine. I wouldn't pick it as Central, probably not even NZ. More like Pommard. Needs food.

Rob - 26/10/2020

A
Lovely wine. Would buy again

Alan - 18/08/2020

Mark - 03/04/2020

J
Silky smooth

John - 31/03/2020

This is a lovely pinot noir, not exceptional but very acceptable and a long way ahead of (though only $1/bottle more expensive) the Akarua 'Rua' which I bought at the same time. Nice dark colour and good on the nose and tongue.

John - 05/06/2021

W
Pleasant wine. Easy to drink.

Wendy - 01/04/2021

I consider Central Otago the NZ premium Pinot Noir growing region. Consequently I expect to pay a little more. I bought this wine for Xmas, I thought it would be something special based on the reviews. I am left totally underwhelmed. Not smooth as some reviews state, definitely NOT a $23 wine, I would place it in the $12 bracket and even at this price there is better quality around. A 2014 vintage, I'm left surmising it hasn't sold well.

M
Couldn’t open the plastic screw cap. Had to use knife and other tools to get the top off. Very disappointed plastic being used. Unsure what todo with the remaining wine. Thanks Margot

Margot - 21/09/2020

We live near Gibbston in Central Otago and never heard of this winery before. We ordered this wine to give it a go and definitely won't be ordering again. It's not that bad but not what we expected from a local pinot noir, especially a 2014 vintage.

Letti - 08/08/2020

P
Good pinot noir for the price
