Description

The 2018 Brookdale Reserve Pinot Gris is made from low cropping old vines in Toi Toi's Brookdale Vineyard. This gives a well structured wine showing ripe stone fruit, nashi pear, melon and floral notes. It displays a mouth-filling richness that is intense and concentrated with a long lasting, persistent clean dry finish. It is drinking well now and will continue to develop and reward with carefull cellaring, over the next 3 to 5 years.

The 2018 vintage will be remembered as one of the trickiest on record, with cool days in February and March and rain coming just before and during harvest. Sugar levels were down in the grapes which prolonged the ripening season and pushed harvest dates back by about seven days compared to normal.

Fortunately, Toi Toi dodged the rain showers and harvested the grapes in the cool of the early morning, in very good conditions. The grapes were picked when the flavours were at optimum, to ensure the fruit flavours are preserved in the wine. Winemakers used a select de-stemmer harvester to softly handle the fruit. Once pressed off skins, the juice was then fermented at low temperatures in stainless steel tanks with selected yeast strains to preserve the inherent delicate fruit flavours. Following fermentation, the wine was aged on light yeast lees to increase palate weight and complexity before it was bottled for enjoyment.

Food Pairing: Try it with Sticky pork bao buns, topped with spicy chopped peanuts, corriander and fresh pineapple salsa or enjoyed as an apertif after a long hot day.
