Description
"A gorgeous complex offering; the inviting bouquet shows dark berry, smoked game, thyme, hazelnut and floral characters, leading to a succulent palate that is concentrated and beautifully flowing. The wine exhibits excellent fruit purity as well as seductive savoury nuances, finishing persistent and velvety. At its best: now to 2022" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Aug 2019
"Even ruby-red colour with some depth and light purple hues, a little paler edged. The nose is fresh and elegantly presented with gentle volume and piquant ethereal aromas of dark-red berry fruit, dark-red and violet florals and a layer of minerally reduction and fine, nutty oak. This has a taut core. Medium-bodied, the palate is fine and poised with fresh, vibrant, fragrant flavours of dark-red cherries and berries entwined with a complex amalgam of dark-red florals, minerally reduction and nutty oak. The fruit is succulent and the mouthfeel is vibrant, and enlivened by fresh acidity and supported by fine-grained, flowery tannins. This has an elegant core and line and carries to a sustained finish. This is an elegantly concentrated and refined Pinot Noir with vibrant, aromatic fruit along with complex reductive and oak notes. Match with roast duck, pork, lamb and beef over the next 5-6 years. A barrel selection wine. Clones 5, 115, 667 and 777, fruit from the company’s estate and neighbouring ‘Barnsley’ vineyards in the Waihopai Valley fermented., the wine aged 10 months in 25% new French oak barriques and puncheons" Raymond Chan, Apr 2018
A bright burgundy with good depth of colour in the glass. The nose offers dark cherry and plum with a fragrant vanilla and mocha oak note. This is a full, rich Pinot Noir with concentrated dark berry fruit flavours perfectly complimented by a touch of smooth spice. The palate has lovely length and fine tannins.
These grapes for this Mystery Wine were grown on vineyards where the soils are clay and silt loam layered over alluvial gravel. The clay in the soil gives this wine its generosity and mouthfeel. The vines are cropped at low levels which involves laying down only two short canes, shoot-thinning and fruit-thinning. The vines are carefully tended to ensure even ripeness and the grapes are picked when fully ripe but without any shrivelling.
The fruit is harvested into open-top fermenters where it undergoes a cold maceration before fermentation kicks off spontaneously. Winemakers have punched down by hand, three times a day to extract maximum flavour from the skins. Vats were left on skins between seven and twenty days post ferment, before pressing to a mixture of French oak barriques and puncheons (25% new). After ten months maceration, the best clones and barrels were selected for this wine.
Food Pairing: Casseroles and stews, roasted meats, lentils and other earthy flavoured dishes.

Robert - 16/09/2019
the first bottle showed Brettanomycetes, a gamy character. Has nice deep red floral characters, deeper than red roses. Nice wine if you like a floral style.
Lance - 16/09/2019
Certainly an interesting complex, dark, slightly smokey, smooth mature wine. Oak and dark berries predominate. Fruit flavours are a little scarse.
