Description

Dark fruit with a touch of cracked pepper and soft, approachable tannins provide great drinkability. Supple and well balanced, it will continue to develop over 4-6 years in the cellar.

The fruit for this wine was destemmed to tank. Hand plunged in small open fermenters, then pressed to tank for MLF.

Redmetal Vineyards began in 1991 with the purchase of a north facing block of prime viticultural land in Hawkes Bay, a region renowned for it's agricultural excellence.  The vineyard is part of an ancient riverbed that once carried rock down to the east coast from the steep Ruahine ranges that form part of the spine of New Zealand?s North Island. These free-draining river deposited gravels (locally known as red metals) form the basis of the major fine wine producing areas within Hawkes Bay.

Their vineyards situated at the south western edge of the Heretaunga Plains, in the acclaimed Bridge Pa Triangle sub-region of Hawkes Bay, 10 minutes drive from the city of Hastings. It is far enough inland to be insulated from the main cooling effects of the sea breeze and is protected from the prevailing southwesterly winds by high mountain ranges and more locally from the south by several ranges of hills. The meso climate here is singularly dry, a rainshadow within an already low rainfall environment. Midsummer temperatures can peak above 40C, and winter frosts ensure vineyard pests and diseases are kept under natural control.
