Description

"Fleshy, flavoursome Pinot Gris with ripe pear, quince and apple flavours. A well-made and appealing wine that emphasises fruit without making the wine overtly sweet while avoiding any suggestion of grippiness on the finish" Bob Campbell, Master of Wine, Real Review, Aug 2018

"The nose is elegantly proportioned with fresh aromas of white and yellow stonefruits entwined with exotic florals, and a subtle amalgam of honeysuckle and herbs. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has good weight and presence with restrained flavours of white and yellow stonefruits interwoven with exotic, perfumed florals and hints of honeysuckle.  This is an up-front dry Pinot Gris with good weight and flavours of stonefruits, florals and honey, on a light-textured palate with an elegant finish" Raymond Chan, Aug 2018

Enticing aromas of baked apple, spice and pear combine with floral notes and lead into a dry and softly textured palate showing lovely fruit purity.

Grapes for this Mystery wine were predominantly grown in a vineyard situated in the free draining gravel based soils of the Ohiti Gravels. Low yielding vines with good fruit exposure have resulted in good flavour intensity and ripeness.

The fruit for this Mystery wine was gently destemmed, crushed and pressed immediately to avoid extended skin contact and the risk of excessive pick up of bitter substances. The naturally settled juiced was then racked clear and inoculated for ferment. Fermentation at cool temperatures has retained fruit purity and acid/sugar balance was achieved by stopping the ferment before complete dryness. Maturation on lees has added a fine texture to the wine prior to gentle filtration and bottling mid-2018.

Food Pairing: Pasta, fish, antipasto and salads.

We ended up with the Vidal's Hawkes Bay Pinot Gris and it was great value. I like that you can choose varieties from specific wine regions in the mystery boxes.

Naera - 06/04/2020

A fairly dry Pinot Gris - almost like a cross between a PG and a Sauv. I really like this wine, but my wife not so much (more for me :-)
