Description

The Nelson Wine Region lies at the top middle of the South Island of New Zealand. These vineyards are situated about 15 kilometers from the Tasman Bay in the Brighwater Region. The vineyards are Certified Organic and range in plantings from 1997 through 2006. Vines are relatively close in planting from 1 to 1.2 meters. Soils range from alluvium interspersed with stones to free-draining river stone and gravel soils with a shallow top layer of clay based silt. 2018 was a solid vintage with interspersed rain late in the growing season, providing more voluptuous flavours to the relatively warm summer.
This Pinot Gris was harvested with an average harvest Brix of 23º to give the finished wine around 13% alcohol. The grapes were crushed and destemmed followed by a short period of skin contact. A portion of the clear juice was fermented at cool temperatures (15-18 º C) in stainless steel to retain primary fruit characters before being stopped to retain a dash of sweetness in the finished wine. Another portion was fermented in old oak barriques to give complexity and texture. The wine was aged on light lees for several months after fermentation to enhance texture and weight.
