"Wonderfully fruited and perfumed, the gorgeously expressed bouquet shows dark cherry, raspberry, game, thyme and roasted almond characters with nuances of mushroom and spice. The palate is concentrated and beautifully weighted, displaying elegance as well as richness, backed by seamlessly woven fine tannins. Splendidly composed and harmonious, offering terrific drinking. At its best: now to 2022" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Nov 2018
"Dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour, a little lighter on the rim with slight purple tints. This has a firm and finely packed nose with aromas of dark-red and black-berried fruits along with a soft and harmonious layer of dark herbs and nuances of whole bunch stalk complexities. The aromatics unfold dark-red floral notes with aeration. Medium-full bodied, the palate has a finely concentrated and elegant core of ripe black and dark-red berry fruit entwined with soft notes of dark herbs and whole bunch stalk nuances, along with violet and dark red floral lift. The wine flows along a finely driven line with refined tannin structure and fresh acidity that lends energy and vibrancy to the mouthfeel. The wine carries to an elegant, sustained finish. This is a finely concentrated Pinot Noir with ripe dark-red and black fruit and a subtle layering of herbs and whole bunch elements, with a refined structure and fresh acidity. Serve with beef, lamb and venison over the next 6 years. Clones 10/5, 5, 6, Abel, 667 and 777, the fruit 88% Parkburn and 12% Gibbston, fermented with a portion of whole bunches to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 10 months in 35% new French oak" Raymond Chan, Nov 2018
Rockburn's hands-off approach delivers a pure expression of Central Otago to your glass; an expressive nose and deeply fruited palate displaying vibrant notes of red and black cherry, rich mocha and supple, silky tannins leading into a very long finish. As always, this wine shows classic Rockburn elegance, integrity and balance. The 2017 vintage yielded beautiful fruit from each of the Rockburn sites, which the winemakers have simply guided gently through to the bottle with minimal handling.
Fermentation: 7 tonne fermenters, 5 to 7 days cold maceration; fermentation over 1 week with daily plunging followed by post fermentation maceration for around 3 weeks. Some batches made good use of whole bunch inclusion. Barrel levage: 10 months in French oak; 35% new, 37% 1 year old.
