Description

"A barrel selection.  Made from a large range of clones, the fruit from 60% ‘Cowley’, 20% ‘Calrossie’ and 20% ‘Eaton Family’ vineyards, indigenous yeast fermented with approx. 5% whole clusters to 13.7% alc., the wine aged 16 months in approx. one-third new French oak.  Full, deep, dark ruby-red colour, youthful in appearance.  This has a full, solid and densely concentrated bouquet of ripe, dark red berry fruits and dark plums, along with complexing notes of spicy oak, and savoury violet florals.  Full-bodied, the fruit is a little locked up, bur dark berry and plum flavours emerge in the glass with spicy oak elements.  The palate is fulsome in structure and texture, with real weight and presence.  Soft acidity lends a rounded edge, but the extract and tannins feature, with some alcohol adding to the power.  The flavours are carried to a long, firm, dry finish with dark fruit notes.  This is a fulsome and structured Pinot Noir with ripe dark fruit flavours and oak spices.  Match with game meat and hard cheeses over the next 6-8 years" Raymond Chan,  Aug 2013

"This is bold and sturdy, yet elegant and delicately structured. The beautifully complex bouquet shows dark cherry, plum, game and truffle characters with a hint of cedar. It's focused and succulent on the palate with velvety texture and plenty of polished tannins. A youthful pinot already showing immense appeal but it will no doubt develop gracefully. At its best: now to 2020" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Aug 2013

"Medium ruby-purple in color and showing quite a youthful nose with notes of warm cranberries and red cherry coulis over hints of potpourri, dried herbs and underbrush, the medium-bodied 2011 TerraVin Hillside Reserve Pinot Noir fills the palate with maturing red fruit and earthy layers that are supported with a grainy tannin backbone and a long finish" Lisa Perrotti-Brown Master of Wine, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate Dec 2014

The medium-bodied 2011 TerraVin Hillside Reserve Pinot Noir fills the palate with maturing red fruit and earthy layers that are supported with a grainy tannin backbone and a long finish. This has a full, solid and densely concentrated bouquet of ripe, dark red berry fruits and dark plums, along with complexing notes of spicy oak, and savoury violet florals.

Founded in 1999, TerraVin is a boutique Marlborough winery with a dedicated focus on growing and making world class hillside Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. Terra being Latin for Earth, the name reflects a deep emphasis on terroir. TerraVin draws fruit from three densely planted sites stretching across the revered Southern Valleys of Marlborough. These hillside vineyards are afforded their true expression through low yields, gentle handling and winemaker Gordon Ritchie’s intuitive approach.

A moderate to low yielding vintage due to a cooler flowering period. A classic Marlborough summer with intermittent rainfall set the vineyard up for a fabulous vintage. A long cool autumn delivered Pinot Noir with exceptional balance in pH and acidity.

Fruit was gently de-stemmed and fermentation started naturally with indigenous yeast after a 5 to 7 day ambient soak. Aged in barrel for 14 to 18 months. French oak; Damy,
Rousseau, Tonnellerie de Mercurey. 28% new oak

Perfect to drink now.....

A favourite. Nicely aged, and drinking well now - great value.

John - 08/04/2019

Well made and good fruit intensity. Was worried it might have fallen over after 8 years but it’s good to go. Not especially good value but ok.
