Description
"Full, very dark, black-red colour with slight purple hues on the edge. The nose is very fresh and elegant with vibrant and aromatic lifted blackcurrant and blackberry fruit along with notes of dark herbs, spices and iron-earth minerals, unveiling some pencilly oak. The aromatics are refined, intense and intricately detailed. Medium-bodied, the palate possesses fresh and lively aromatic fruit flavours of blackcurrants and cassis with blackberries, dark herbs, subtle earthy elements and pencilly oak. The mouthfeel is fresh and poised with bright, lacy acidity providing energy and tension, and a fine-grained structural line that leads to a ling, piquant blackcurrant and herb flavoured finish. This is an elegant, refreshingly vibrant Cabernet/Merlot blend with blackcurrant, herb, earthy and subtle oak flavours on a fine-grained palate. Match with roast beef or lamb over the next 7-9+ years. A blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon,30% Merlot and 19% Cabernet Franc from the ‘Irongate’ vineyard, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 15 months in 40% new French oak" Raymond Chan, Apr 2017
"Dark ruby and purple core with a ruby hue and pink rim. Aromas violets, stony earth, dark berries and Doris plum, brown spices and woody tones. A steely haunting core add complexity and charm. On the palate – firm, dry, fruity and complex with flavours of violets and dark berries, cacao and brown baking spices; fine to moderately textured tannins, medium+ acidity and lengthy finish. Drink now and through 2026" Cameron Douglas, Master Somilier, Sept 2017
"Reasonably dense, oaky red with floral, violet, cranberry, plum, chocolate, mocha and nutty oak flavours. An elegant red that's accessible but will improve with further bottle age. Drink 2017 to 2022" Bob Campbell, Master Of Wine, Real Review, Jun 2017
Sweetly perfumed - clove and cinnamon backed up with dark plums, vanilla and a touch of cedar. Palate is richly fruited. Plums and forest berries with savoury leather and cigar notes. Seamless and dense tannins add to the sense of warmth. Opulence nicely balanced with a red vibrancy and spice on the finish.
Babich have been producing Babich Irongate Cabernet Merlot Franc since 1986 and it has evolved into this richly flavoured, balanced and elegant wine. The vines from this now-famous Gimblett Gravels Irongate vineyard are selected at pruning, and crop levels are closely monitored to ensure excellent flavour concentration in the grapes.
This delightful blend includes Cabernet Sauvignon (51%), Merlot (30%), Cabernet Franc (19%) which were hand harvested from Babich's Irongate vineyard in the Hawke’s Bay region. In the winery these were cold soaked and then fermented in open top vats with malolactiv fermentation. Then the juice spent 16 months in new & seasoned oak barriques. Great drinking now but also can be cellared up to 3-15 years.
Food Pairing: This wine is a brilliant match for red meats, game and pasta dishes. A perfect partner for casseroled lamb shanks or with scotch fillet, roasted rare.
