Description
"Made from old-vine grenache, this is magnificently expressed on the nose showing sweet aromas of ripe dark berry, spiced plum and strawberry tart with nuances of hazelnut and cocoa. The palate is concentrated and sumptuous with excellent fruit weight and richness, wonderfully supported by velvety mouthfeel and supple tannins. It is mouthfilling and delectable. At its best: now to 2020" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Aug 2018
"I struggle to think of another portfolio that encompasses anywhere close to this level of value" Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate
"Very dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour with slight purple hues, a little lighter on the edge. The nose is softly packed and gently expressed with aromas of dark raspberries with subtle notes of blackberries and liquorice, unfolding a little dark-red floral lift. This builds in presence with aeration. Full-bodied, the palate has rich, juicy and lusciously sweet flavours of dark raspberry fruit along with black fruits and hints of liquorice, with florals. The flavours are up-front and the palate has plenty of weight and presence. The tannins are fine-grained and allied with soft acidity, allowing some alcohol power to show. The wine carries to a light, elegant finish. This is a powerful, up=front, juicy and lusciously sweet, dark raspberry-fruited old-vine Grenache with fine grained tannins and structure. Match with barbecued and roasted red meat dishes over the next 4-5 years. Named after Jean-Marc and Eliane Lafage’s son. Hand-picked Grenache Noir, vines around 65 y.o., fermented to 15.0% alc., the wine aged 10 months in seasoned oak" Raymond Chan, Aug 2018
"The 2016 Nicolas is old-vine Grenache, blended from the vineyards around the winery and higher-elevation sites near Aspres and Maury. It's super ripe, loaded with black cherry fruit that comes awfully close to being chocolaty. Half of this rich, full-bodied wine was matured in demi-muids, while the rest stayed in concrete. Drink this terrific value over the next few years" Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate
Cuvée Nicolas is named after Jean-Marc and Eliane’s son and comes from Grenache grown in the schist soils of the foothills of the Pyrenees in Aspres. These low yielding vines (19hl/ha) are around 65 years old and are planted on terraces with southern and southeastern exposure.
The fruit is hand-harvested before being fermented in tank and undergoing a 30-day maceration. The wine is then aged for 10 months in neutral French oak barrels.
