Description
"The Colombo family base is in Cornas but this fresh, Grenache-dominant wine is from neighbouring vineyards in Cairanne, Rasteau and Vacqueyras. The silky-smooth palate is full of juicy red cherry and berries, fennel seeds and dried herbs – the perfect partner for stews and casseroles" Tina Gellie, Decanter Magazine, Nov 2016
Intense purple color in the glass this delicious French red offers seductive aromas of red fruits, coriander and bay leaf on the nose. The palate is a fresh with a silky mouthfeel, with notes of licorice and spice. Like the bees, 'Les Abeilles', this wine is named after is vigorous and lively!
Jean-Luc Colombo is one of France’s most talented and creative winemakers. Since the early 1980s he has been crafting first-class wines from the Northern Rhone Valley and Southern France. His philosophy all these years has been to produce fruit forward, elegant wines that are pure in flavour and expressive of their terroir. Of his wines Jean-Luc Colombo says: "My passion is to create wines that give people pleasure. I want each glass to be remembered for their statement of quality". This approach has ruffled some feathers, but we believe results speak for themselves.
'Les Abeilles' is named for the honey bees that inhabit the vineyards where the wine was sourced, and is a nod to Jean-Luc Colombo's commitment to fighting the bee colony colapse crisis. Jean-Luc Colombo’s commitment to saving these fascinating creatures starts in these vineyards with the practice of sustainable viticulture (no harmful chemicals used). After all, only when sustainability is practiced can bees survive and prosper. To further celebrate these fabulous creatures, Jean-Luc Colombo commissioned French artist Marie-Annick Dutreil to create a watercolor that expressed the grace and liveliness of these magnificent creatures, which is featured on the bottle.
Whilst the Colombo family base is in Cornas this fresh, wine was sourced from neighbouring vineyards in Cairanne, Rasteau and Vacqueyras of the southern Rhône Valley, from vines with a minimum of 25 years of age. This blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre sees a 1/3 of each varietal. These grapes were harvested manually, before being de-stemmed, lightly crushed and fermented in stainless steel tanks. 10% of the wine is aged in oak for nine to twelve months before bottling.
