Description
This is an elegant expression of a Hawke's Bay Red blend made up of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. The nose is intense with aromas of Black Doris plum, cassis and cedar while the palate is soft and fruit driven, with flavours of sweet, dark berries and subtle spice complemented by integrated oak. The fine-grained and supple tannins lead to a long and lingering finish.
The Te Awa Single Estate Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from a selection of our oldest, most premium vineyard blocks on the estate vineyard. Our vineyard is located on free draining Gimblett Gravel soils especially suited to the growing of high-quality Bordeaux varietals. Intensive management during the season has resulted in low yielding vines producing high-quality parcels of fruit.
2016 was another great vintage for Hawkes Bay, with the grapes being picked at optimum levels of ripeness. The grapes were picked and destemmed then
transferred to open top fermenters, where they were given a brief cold soak and allowed to warm up and ferment spontaneously with native vineyard yeasts. The young wine was then drawn off the skins and aged for a total of 20 months in French oak barrels (40% new) before being blended and prepared for bottling. Drinking well upon release this wine can be cellared with confidence for five to ten years.
