Description

Toro’s wines have always been noted for the enormous strength and personality of the Tinta de Toro, a variety from which Raul Acha, Vintae´s winemaker, also had the intention of extracting an elegance and smoothness that would open these wines to a wider audience.

Matsu is the Japanese word for 'wait', and the winery's philosophy is one of patience and environmental harmony. In this collection you can explore Matsu's experiment to make combine Toro's traditional strength, smoothness and elegance to the tastes of the current consumer...

1 x Matsu 'El Picaro' Tempranillo 2016 (Spain)

Awarded 94/100 Points: Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Aug 2018

Awarded 93/100 Points: Cameron Douglas, Mar 2018

Awarded Silver Medal: International Wine & Spirits Competition 2017

"Made with very old vines of the Tempranillo variety - this wine displays aromas, flavours and textures of plush black and blue fruits; sweet meats with a chorizo moment then some hints of oak with dark spices and ans touch of licorice root or black candy. Firm and dry on the palate with an abundance of tannins and long juicy finish" Cameron Douglas, Mar 2018

"Superbly fruited and sweetly fragrant on the nose. The palate delivers excellent concentration and succulent mouthfeel, wonderfully enhanced by juicy fruit intensity and velvety texture. Sumptuous and hugely appealing" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Aug 2018

The name Picaro means 'rogue' or 'rascal', and this rapscallion of a wine is a youthful interpretation of the Toro region's style. The grapes come from mature vines of over 50 years of age, but the wine spends only three months in oak, preserving their natural fruit profile.

Food Pairing: Enjoy on its own or with boldly flavoured pasta dishes or spicy meat skewers.

Seal: Cork - Alc: 14.5%

1 x Matsu 'El Recio' Tempranillo 2015 (Spain)

Awarded 93/100 Points: Bob Campbell, Master of Wine, Real Review, Apr 2018

"Rich, almost chewy red with plum, dark berry, chocolate/mocha, liquorice and a strong influence of American oak. A 'crowd pleasing' style with sweet fruit balanced by fine, ripe tannins. Should develop well in bottle" Bob Campbell, Master of Wine, Real Review, Apr 2018

Intense and opaque, this wine is a mass of deep black fruit, chocolate, roasted coffee bean and vanilla pod aromas. Voluptuous and weighty, with a firm structure, held together by silky tannins. This is a corpulent wine also having a lot of finesse, with an intense nose having notes of chocolate, black fruits and vanilla. In the mouth the taste is striking, being predominantly round and silky, very unctuous with subtle hints of the glycerine. Touches of fruits linger in the after taste as do mineral notes. This is a full body wine yet at the same time very easy to drink.

El Recio translates as 'the tough guy', and is a more serious, mature wine, made from the product of some of Toro's oldest vines (90-100 years old), which are cultivated using advanced biodynamic techniques. 14 months in new French oak provide opulence and polish.

Food Pairing: A great steak wine, which longs to be paired with rare asado-style beef fillet or sirloin.

Seal: Cork - Alc: 14.5%

1 x Matsu 'El Viejo' Tempranillo 2015 (Spain)

A deep cherry color, high lamina, with violet colored notes in its border. Thanks to the barrel aging the wine acquired a very intense nose with mature black fruit aromas, well integrated with the toasted, spiced and smoked notes. Corpulent in the mouth with very mature and round tannins that give its sweetnes. In the long and persistent aftertaste appear once again mature fruit perfectly assembled with the roasted character of the wood. The wine is immensely powerful and complex, offering cigar box, lavender and graphite nuances against a backdrop of dense cherry and bramble fruit.

'El Viejo' is 'The Old One' of the Matsu range, made from the fruit of selected Tinta de Toro vines, averaging 110 years of age.

Fruit for this wine is selected from century old vineyards of very limited production, cultivated according to the biodynamic technical standards. The vineyards are fully organic. Manual harvest was undertaken during the first 15 days of October. Then fermentation and maceration during 3 weeks in reinforced concrete deposits of 10.000 kg. The malolactic fermentation takes place in new French oak barrels, as its aging during 16 months. This wine has not been filtered and has been clarified without using agressive processes.

Food Pairing: Enjoyable immediately, partnered with good quality steak or rare roasts. This wine will also reward cellaring of 5 years or more.
