Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, April 2018
Description
"Friendly and comforting, this delightfully expressed merlot shows dark plum, cranberry, hazelnut, thyme and warm spice aromas on the nose. The palate is elegantly weighted and succulent, offering supple mouthfeel and bright fruit flavours, finishing pleasingly dry. At its best: now to 2020" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, April 2018
Rich and round aromas of dark fruit, with inky spices, old leather and varnished timber. The palate is fruit driven with rich black berry and peach flavours, and a hint of alluring spice. The weighty and rounded ripe tannins are supported by well-balanced acidity and a toasted oak finish.
Outstanding fruit for this wine was sourced from a number of low cropping vineyards in the Hawke’s Bay region. The vigour moderating, free-draining gravel provides a superb base for this varietal.
Once at the winery the wine was hand-plunged to gently extract flavour, colour, and tannin. When primary fermentation was completed the young wine was aged on light lees then blended, fined, balanced and carefully prepared for bottling. Drinking well now, this wine will continue to develop and impress for four to five years from vintage date.
Food Pairing: A great match with roast duck or beef bourguignon.
