A key focus of Villa Maria is to be environmentally responsible and to operate using sustainable practices in order to protect the land for future generations.
Villa Maria began its organic program in 1999 and achieved Biogro certification with the Joseph Soler vineyard in 2007. This Single Vineyard Rosé was carefully produced from handpicked Organic Merlot grapes from Villa Maria's Joseph Soler vineyard in Hawkes Bay. The soils in this areas, with their varying depth of silt loam and ridges of free draining gravel are ideal for the production of premium red wines. Yields were cropped low allowing vines to produce fruit that is richly concentrated in flavour, whilst organic methods were employed to prevent pests and promote vine health.
The 2017 Hawkes Bay vintage was a season of two halves with very warm dry conditions prevailing for the majority of summer, including the driest January in over 50+ years of records. Soon after, the rain arrived and picking was made from early March onwards. The conditions experienced in the midlate Summer were the catalyst for ensuring flavour and tannin ripeness was achieved in red varietals. Earlier harvesting suited Rosé in particular, ensuring aromatics and freshness were retained in the resulting wines.
