The Crossings Pinot Gris 2017 shows concentrated notes of ripe pear and honeysuckle, with underlying spicy flavours. The palate is luscious and generous showing wonderful balance between fruit and acidity with a long dry finish.
Beneath the towering peak of Mt. Tapuae-o-Uenuku, where early settlers crossed the fast-flowing Awatere River, The Crossing's three distinct riverside vineyards produce wines of intense varietal character and vibrant acidity. Sustainably grown in the premium sub-region of the Awatere Valley, The Crossings range of wines are a pure and elegant expression of Marlborough.
Marlborough experienced a mild-to-cool spring period, which ensured that the vines naturally produced lighter than average yields. These mild temperatures then extended into the summer months, coupled with an unseasonal period of rain, which ultimately alleviated the drought conditions we had experienced over the past two years. Carrying lighter than usual crops along with the cooler weather meant vintage started only a week later than previous years. The Pinot Gris from this year is showing honeysuckle and nashi pear with some bees wax high tones. The wines are juicy and well structured.
Select parcels of Pinot Gris were harvested in the Awatere Valley. The blocks were selected for their purity of flavour and balance. The fruit was gently pressed then separated from the pressings and cold settled for 48 hours before being racked. Following a long, cool fermentation, the wine was kept on lees for a period of two months to enhance texture and body. Post fermentation the wine was stabilised and filtered prior to bottling.
Food Pairing: Enjoy with poultry and mushroom dishes such as creamy pasta with porcini.
