Description

"Bright, light straw-yellow colour with a little depth, paler on the rim.  This has an elegantly concentrated nose with aromas of white and yellow stonefruits, subtle notes of fresh herbs and green stonefruits, along with nutty lees and nuances of oak at the core.  This has delicacy and detail.  Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has a finely concentrated heart with good depth of exotic yellow stonefruits with fragrant floral elements, hints of nuts and honey providing complexing detail.  The mouthfeel is softly vibrant with some fruit richness and unctuousness balanced by crisp, underlying acidity.  The wine has a rounded texture and carries long, lingering finish of exotic fruits and florals.  This is a moderately concentrated and unctuous dry Gruner Veltliner with exotic stonefruit, floral and honied flavours on a vibrant palate.  Serve with Asian and Middle Eastern fare over the next 2+ years.  Fruit from the ‘Willow Flat’ vineyard. hand-picked and fermented with solids in seasoned French oak barriques, a 1,000 L French oval, stainless-steel tank and a concrete egg to 13.5% alc. and 3.2 g/L RS, the wine aged on lees with batonnage" Raymond Chan, Jan 2018

"A lovely example of the variety, the elegantly lifted bouquet shows white nectarine, lemon peel, jasmine and apple blossom aromas, followed by a juicy palate that is nicely rounded and smooth. The wine offers delicate fruit intensity and fine texture, beautifully framed by refreshing acidity. At its best: now to 2019" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Jan 2018

The Crossings Grüner Veltliner shows lifted notes of peach, honey and spice. The palate is rich and complex, highlighted by nut and spice notes with a creamy texture that finishes with fine acidity.

The 2016 growing season was warm and very dry, and some late rain in February set the vines up well going into harvest. The Grüner Veltiner comes from the Crossing's Willowflat Vineyard in the Awatere Valley, which produces vines with low vigour and sweet fruit; a perfect combination for aromatic varieties such as this. Intensive vineyard management resulted in low cropping vines with very even ripening which made picking decisions on the 1.5Ha terrace easy! The fruit was hand-picked, gently destemmed and pressed to tank where it was settled for 24 hours. The juice was then racked with a slightly increased amount of solids in order to assist with palate weight and texture in the final wine. Four different fermentation vessels were used; 225L old French barriques, a 1000L new French oval, a stainless steel tank, and a concrete egg! At the end of fermentation the wines were left on lees and regularly stirred, again to add texture and complexity. We then blended the wine, stabilised and filtered for bottling.

Food Pairing: This wine is extremely versatile and can be enjoyed with Asian cuisine, pork and chicken dishes.
