The vineyard for the Mt. Beautiful wines is situated 100kms north of Christchurch, in North Canterbury New Zealand. The gently sloping hillside blocks, rich silty loam over clay soils and a site-specific microclimate combine to make elegant, balanced and textural single estate wines. These handcrafted wines fully utilize the natural characteristics of the Mt. Beautiful vineyard, and are a true expression of its unique location. Taking advantage of the natural contours of the land, Mt. Beautiful encompasses 140 hectares of rolling hills and gullies. Over 65 hectares of vines are planted on the north facing slopes, perfectly positioned to catch optimum sun and warmth. “The Chasm”, a naturally occurring gully that separates the vineyard into 22 north and south blocks, dissects the two main hillsides. The northern blocks are lower and cooler and more suited to Sauvignon Blanc, whilst the southern blocks are higher and warmer and ideally suited to Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Riesling.
