"Visiting Cheviot Hills in North Canterbury may not be on everyone’s bucket list, but trying wines from the district should be on everyone’s must try list. Recently released 2011 Pinot Gris is their best yet, it is flavoursome, textural and engaging with elegant aromas of white peach, pear and floral characters. nashi pear and gentle spice

An inviting nose of ripe pears and stone fruit along with nuances of yellow flowers, cinnamon and Turkish delight. The palate has a delicious texture which enrobes the crunchy nashi pear and gentle spice flavours. A finely balanced acidity gives definition and a gentle
lingering flavour on the finish.

Picked in the cool of the day and gently pressed to ensure the finest juice. Fermented at cool temperatures to capture the purity of aromas and flavours. The wine was minimally handled to retain freshness and varietal expression and bottled in late spring.

Delicious on its own and a great accompaniment to lightly spiced dishes.

ripe yellow stonefruits lifted with complexing notes of minerals, honeysuckle and spices.

5 Stars & 18.5/20: Raymond Chan; Raymond Chan Wine Reviews

Brilliant straw-yellow colour with pale green-gold hues. This has an elegantly presented nose that grows in layers and volume showing pure aromas of ripe yellow stonefruits lifted with complexing notes of minerals, honeysuckle and spices. The bouquet has an array of detail and nuance. Off-dry to taste and medium-bodied, the flavours of white and yellow stonefruits form an elegantly rich core. Gentle layers of interest unfold, with minerals, honey, exotic florals and spices. The fruit is supported by fresh, lacy acidity that provides excellent tension and line, and the flavours are carried to a very long,... Read more »

apricot blossom, marzipan and hazelnut

*** LIMITED TIME - SPECIAL PRICE****

Lifted spicy pear aromas with hints of apricot blossom, marzipan and hazelnut. The palate is full and soft textured with spicy preserved pear flavours and a long clean finish.

Another classic cool climate grape growing season, this was a season to set new records and challenges but all towards a great result at the end. A cool spring set up led to later than average flowering. As spring progressed with continued cool weather and unseasonal rain the vines reacted by setting the perfect number of berries to match the season, lighter bunches combined with a perfect Indian summer saw fruit able to be left on the vines to slowly ripen over the second half of March and April.

Clean, polished & aromatic

Gold Medal: NZIWS 2012

Ripe pear, apple and peach fruit flavours with hints of nougat and nutmeg/cinnamon spice aromatics. This is a medium-bodied wine with soft, plush texture. A complex array of aromatics fill the palate and are held on the polished, clean finish.

reminiscent of pears and creaming soda

Inviting bouquet reminiscent of pears and creaming soda and a hint of honey.  Lingering palate, full flavoured and balanced. The subtle barrel oak treatment, while there is no apparent oak pick up, served to meld all the portions together producing a gentile Pinot Gris that will age gracefully.

Twenty percent of the free run juice was put directly to oak and left to undergo natural ferment in oak while the remainder of the juice fermented naturally in a tank.  The ferment in tank was stopped with refrigeration with a little residual sugar, just enough to encourage the length of palate. The wine was kept on lees for 10 months to encourage tactility, a very important component of all my wines. It was bottled in March 2013. The chosen fruit along with the style... Read more »

"Classic pear with alluring almond and gingerbread characters"

Gold Medal: NZIWS 2012

Bright, very pale straw on release. Classic pear with alluring almond and gingerbread characters. A round soft palate, enhanced by having a small portion of the blend aged for three months in oak barrels. This adds a touch of spice and biscuit to the full, rich finish. Winemakers Notes

In 1989 the unlikely combination of two windsurfing mates restauranteur Chris Gambitsis and police detective Phil Binnie decided that enjoying wine was not enough and what they really wanted to do was grow grapes and make wine. In true kiwi fashion, they jumped in the deep end, and set about establishing the notoriously stony Falcon Vineyard.... Read more »

perfume of pears, quince and subtle candied fruit

GOLD MEDAL: Royal Easter Show 2013

The nose offers perfume of pears, quince and subtle candied fruit. The palate backs this up and sweet pear/fig dominating the fruit flavours and soft texture. The wine is silky and deceptively full bodied showing nice balance of sugar and acid leaving a clean and crisp finish that is not oily or cloying. "peach, nectarine and apricots...smooth and lingering"

White blossom petal and pears are leading factors in the aroma of this Pinot Gris. They draw your sensors into a palate laden with orchard fruits which includes peach, nectarine and apricots. Sensing an interesting oily texture like the flesh of a Loquat close to the stone, this wine fills the mouth with a viscosity that is smooth and lingering. Approachable now the 2012 Pinot Gris will age well for 6 - 8 years. Pair with Asian flavours. Carrick Pinot Gris is grown at our Cairnmuir Road Vineyard.

"Honeysuckle and spice flavours with a textured and creamy finish"

SILVER MEDAL: Spiegelau International Wine Competition 2012

Winemaker’s Notes: This wine displays fresh floral, nectarine and peach aromas. Honeysuckle and spice flavours are full on the off-dry palate with a textured and creamy finish.

Vinification: Our vinification is aimed at retaining the maximum possible fruit aromas as seen in the vineyard. The grapes were machine harvested in the cool of the morning, then destemmed, crushed and pressed to stainless steel tanks. We fermented at low temperatures with a neutral yeast. We lees stir to add palate weight. After fermentation the wine is racked and cold... Read more »

"pears, tropical spices and guavas...fleshy and unctuous with a core of tangy minerality"

The bright lemon hue of the young wine hints at the ripeness of fruit. It has generous aromas and flavours typical of the variety, suggesting pears, tropical spices and guavas. The barrel fermentation and ageing have added an intriguing layer of complexity and filled out the palate structure. The wine is fleshy and unctuous with a core of tangy minerality and acidity which draw out its length.

aromas of ripe pear, apple crumble and spice with hints of dried grass

The nose exhibits aromas of ripe pear, apple crumble and spice with hints of dried grass. The weighty palate is richly textured, with background creaminess from lees contact, balanced by a fresh acidity providing a lingering finish. Drinking well now, this wine will cellar for the next five years.

Touted by some very experienced winemakers as the perfect vintage, 2010 would certainly come close in our assessment as well. The grapes for this wine comes from our clay-rich hillside Raupo Creek vineyard and the Home vineyard which is made up of a variety of free draining Waimakiriri soils.

The sentinel stone at the entrance to our Home Vineyard in Marlborough, New Zealand, signals the path to both our winery and our philosophy. The... Read more »

"pear, spice, braeburn apple and lychees...rich, off dry, opulent and balanced"

The cool weather of the Awatere Valley brings out the oral side of Pinot Gris. Our 2012 features aromas of pear, spice, braeburn apple and lychees. The palate is rich, off dry, opulent and balanced. The finish has the hallmark minerality found in all of our white wines.

The fruit for our 2012 Pinot Gris was harvested from our estate vineyard in the Awatere Valley. A combination of canopy and yield management ensured great concentration and avour in the fruit. After whole bunch pressing, 10% of the juice was fermented in older French oak barriques using wild yeasts indigenous to our vineyard. While in oak, the lees were stirred regularly. The remaining 90% was fermented in stainless steel with a selected yeast... Read more »

“Attractively aromatic & fragrant florals”

4.5 Stars: Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

4 Stars: Raymond Chan, Raymond Chan Wine Reviews

“Bright, pale straw-yellow colour, pale on edge. The bouquet is softly fresh with attractively aromatic and fragrant florals, stonefruits and subtle tropical fruit notes. Dryish to taste, subtly rich flavours of white florals and pears show with delicacy and aromatic detail, and form a moderately concentrated core. The palate is soft textured and possesses a slipperiness from restrained acidity, flowing smoothly and carrying the delicate fruit flavours to a light, clean finish... Read more »
