"of enduring texture and flavour which is delicious to drink in so many situations"

A nose of rich pear and peach with a hint of lily of the valley and light spice. Totally luxurious wine – a very classy movement across the palate with a flick of phenolics to refresh. The wine is texturally interesting – there is a counterpoint between silk and a lightly grainy texture reminiscent of feijoa This wine walks the tightrope of richness without putting a
food wrong - never blowsy or showy but rather a wine of enduring texture and flavour which is delicious to drink in so many situations.

Alone, with light Asian spiced foods. Great with cheese and it handles rich meats with ease.

"richly textured and luscious showing both excellent weight and length"

The wine is richly textured and luscious showing both excellent weight and length, best savoured with spontaneity and deep belly laughs.

"refreshing and flavoursome and not at all cloying"

The 2011 has touches of cinnamon, spice and canned apricot from the St Helena clone and more subtle characters of peach, pear and chalk from the GM clone. The wine has a balance of natural sugar, acid, tannin and a lifted spritz on the palate which gives the wine liveliness. Although it is a relatively sweet wine the balance of the key elements means the wine is refreshing and flavoursome and not at all cloying.

Ponui Island is located to the south east of Waiheke Island in the Hauraki Gulf. It is here that we have chosen to grow Pinot Gris where cool sea breezes temper the south facing slopes. Made up of two distinctly diff erent clones; our GM clone which is picked relatively early and the St Helena clone which we hang out as long as possible on... Read more »

"Medium-bodied with ripe pear and apricot flavours and a touch of spice"

Pure Silver Medal: Air New Zealand Wine Awards 2011

Lifted notes of pear and apricot, supported by underlying bread-crust and marzipan with delicate floral notes. A medium-bodied wine with a refreshing and full palate showing ripe pear and apricot along with a touch of spice. Excellent balance with a long lingering finish.

"YEAR IN YEAR OUT NZ'S MOST AWARDED PINOT GRIS"

Blue-Gold Medal: Sydney Top 100 International Wine Competition.

The stoney soil this fruit has come from has given a mineral edge to this otherwise succulent wine. The off dry palate is packed with pure fruit, nashi pear and white peach. The finish is both clean and long. Sip with summer salads, spicy Asian dishes or partner with creamy sauces.

From the first vintage release of a trophy-winning Sauvignon Blanc in 1997, Waimea Estates has attracted attention. Bob Campbell MW commented early on: “I am profoundly impressed by the overall quality of the wines – this is clearly a winery worth watching.”

Ripe pear, quince paste, fresh hay and ginger

2011 was an exceptional season for Waipara Valley Pinot Gris with an early flower set and cool, dry ripening season. Ripe pear, quince paste, fresh hay and ginger aromatics lead to a dry and structured palate showing great weight and texture. Serve lightly chilled. Winemakers Notes

It's the extreme natural environments of the mountains, hills and valleys of the South Island that gives the wines of Waipara Hills its intensity, character and complexity - multi-award winning wine that expresses the true soul of the south. At Waipara Hills our philosophy is simple. It's about allowing the characteristics of each season's fruit to shine, then creating perfect balance with as little interference as possible. The result is wine that is rich, vibrant... Read more »

"Heady aromas of red apple and passion-fruit are wrapped in soft notes of wild honey and ripe pear"

Heady aromas of red apple and banana passion-fruit are wrapped in soft notes of wild honey and ripe pear. A fine acid structure wrapped in soft oily ribbons gives perfect balance. "aromas of honeysuckle, pear, white peaches & fresh straw"

This wine is pale straw in colour. When released in Nov 2011, this Pinot Gris was showing aromas of honeysuckle, pear, white peaches & fresh straw. Hints of spice, juicy pear & nougat are apparent on the palate. Made in a fresh, vibrant style, this Pinot Gris has added complexity and texture from the partial wild & malolactic fermentations. This has resulted in a luscious wine with good weight suitable for any occasion.

After exploring the globe's wine producing areas and working many consecutive vintages in Italy, Jules settled back into Marlborough helping to produce award winning wines for the likes of Kim Crawford, Saint Clair and Cape Campbell. Marlborough Icon

Pristine aromas of fresh citrus and white pear with a persistent floral lift of white rose petal and jasmine. A beautifully textured wine showing rich, ripe flavours of fleshy nectarine and baked apple. Concentrated and fully flavoured with a beautifully dry finish. Brent Marris - Winemaker

The Ned is the latest release from winemaker, Brent Marris. Named after one of the tallest rugged peaks to the southeast of the vineyard, The Ned is a deeply personal project for Brent.

"The opulent mouth-feel makes this wine a great drink"

Flavours and aromas of Nashi pear and spice are evident. The rich texture and fullness, even though the wine is essentially dry, are the result of ripe grapes. The wine has great balance with finesse and purity of fruit. The standout is the texture of the wine. The opulent mouth-feel makes this wine a great drink. Winemakers Notes

This is a great wine to drink on its own or it would fit well with Asian style food. Serve lightly chilled.

Trinity Hills reputation is based on their ability to produce outstanding wines that explode with fruit character and yet retain the sophistication and complexity we would expect from old world wines. John Hancock is regarded as one of New Zealands leading and most innovative winemakers.

"Lifted aromas of orange blossom and pear juice. A lush layered palate with white peach and citrus flavours"

Bright and clear with a pale golden hue. Lifted aromas of orange blossom and pear juice. A lush layered palate with white peach and citrus flavours. The wine finishes with a zesty punch of fresh ginger and orange peel tang. Winemakers Notes

Respect for Akarua as a skillfully grown and crafted Central Otago wine style is now well recognised. First planted in 1996 by Sir Clifford Skeggs, Akarua's 50 hectare single vineyard estate is located in the prestigious Bannockburn sub-region of Central Otago. These wines however, are 'hard won' from soils that are mostly broken schist and sand. There are extremes of hot and cold; frosts in winter and dry nor'westers that devigorate... Read more »

"Honeysuckle and spice flavours are full on the off-dry palate with a textured and creamy finish"

This wine displays fresh floral, nectarine and peach aromas. Honeysuckle and spice flavours are full on the off-dry palate with a textured and creamy finish.

Our vinification is aimed at retaining the maximum possible fruit aromas as seen in the vineyard. The grapes were machine harvested in the cool of the morning, then destemmed, crushed and pressed to stainless steel tanks. We fermented at low temperatures with a neutral yeast. We lees stir to add palate weight. After fermentation the wine is racked and cold stabilised before bottling.

"a long lingering finish"

"Nobody has more experience growing grapes in Marlborough than Allan Scott"

"An elegant complex wine with aromas of red apple, pear and white stonefruit. The long soft mid palate gives way to a balanced structure of acid and phenolics, creating a long lingering finish." Winemakers Notes

Nobody has more experience growing grapes in Marlborough than Allan Scott. He planted some of the region's most famous vineyards, including the very first, and has worked the land there every vintage since. He physically helped plant the region's very first vineyard in 1973. Many of the vineyards he developed subsequently have gone on to win world recognition. In 1985, he bought land in the Rapaura... "rich and textural on the palate"

"Seductive pear, spice, cinnamon and clove aromas"

Silver Medal: NZIWS

"Seductive pear, spice, cinnamon and clove aromas with a core of ripe quince and subtle floral notes. This off-dry wine is rich and textural on the palate, displaying complex natural ferment characters. A refined and balanced level of acidity combined with hints of minerality unleash a sense of crispness resulting in a harmonious finish."

This site is sheltered from the south resulting in a very warm mesoclimate. Special attention to vine balance in this block allows grapes to reach full potential. Careful yield

"This wine has exceptional harmony and balance"

"a long textural finish"

"The nose is packed with dense pear, quince and delicate florals. The initial front palate sweetness leads into a layered mineral fruit and spice core with a long textural finish. This wine has exceptional harmony and balance with the generosity of fruit making this an easy drinking pleasurable wine."

Carrick Pinot Gris is grown at our Cairnmuir Road Vineyard. We believe that the elements of a good Pinot Gris are distinctive flavours, with a richness and weight to the palate. This wine was whole bunch pressed and fermented using wild yeast to give complexity to the aromatics and also had regular lees stirring. A portion was fermented in old... Read more »

Trophy for Champion Pinot Gris: NZIWS 2011

"a light, crisp and steely textured wine"

"Brilliant straw-yellow colour, this has a fresh, elegant nose of white stonefruits and spiced pears along with some herb nuances. Off-dry to taste, this is a light, crisp and steely textured wine showing aromatic pear and nectarine fruit flavours with some honey notes. Up-front and uncomplicated, the crisp nature will make it a good match with seafood and moderately flavoured Pacific Rim or Asian cuisine over the next 2 years" Raymond Chan.

A lovely fresh Pinot Gris with gentle lifted aromas of fresh pear, nectarine and a touch of spice. The aromas flow through to the pale which also displays pear, stone fruits and a delicious thread... Read more »

"full of personality"

5 stars: Winestate Magazine

"Notably rich and complex, in a barrel-fermented, Alsace style, full of personality. Beautifully floral, concentrated, ripe and rounded, with an oily richness and deep stonefruit flavours, slightly spicy, gingery and long."

"The nose exhibits aromas of quince, apple crumble and spice with hints of dried grass. The weighty palate is richly textured, with background creaminess from lees contact, balanced by a fresh acidity providing a lingering finish. Drinking well now, this wine will cellar for the next five years."

“a very good example of this varietal”

88 POINTS: eRobertParker.com

Showing me the Pinot Gris during my visit was almost an after-thought, nonetheless Kumeu’s 2009 Pinot Gris is a very good example of this varietal (not to mention very popular). Displaying moderate to intense apple, peach and pear aromas, there’s a pleasantly yeasty/spicy undercurrent. The medium bodied style is dry with a notable touch of sweetness (10 grams per liter), medium-high acid, a nice bit of viscosity and a long, refreshing finish. Drink it now through 2013. eRobertParker.com, #191, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW
