Produced since 1984, Elston is an outstanding New Zealand chardonnay, grown at Te Mata Estate's oldest vineyards on the hillsides above the winery. It is rich and complex with flavours of fresh pineapple, white peach and nougat.

Elston ‘11 has a brilliant, green gold colour, and lovely aromas of nectarine and white peach, with a background of oatmeal and cedar. It is elegant and intense, with a mineral tension in the extended palate that suggests considerable cellaring potential.

Elston ‘11 will continue to evolve in bottle for five years from harvest and matches well with full flavoured dishes based on seafood, poultry and white meats, as well as soft ripened cheeses.

The fruit for this wine was selected from three distinct blocks on the "Left Field" of our Estate vineyard. The fruit flavours are reminiscent of ripe peach and citrus fruits, including a whiff of orange-skins and marmalade supported by a touch of spice. They are delightfully melded with subtle hazelnut, toast and buttery nuances. The low crop level has resulted in good fruit concentration but the wine remains very tight knit with a tangy core and long tingling tail of minerality.

The grapes were grown on a mixture of clay and stony soils. We removed sufficient leaves from around the bunches to keep them well ventilated and healthy while maintaining dappled sunlight to prevent them from becoming too hot.
