The Always Rich, Soft and Plush St Henri

Penfolds St Henri is a highly successful and alternative expression of Shiraz and an intriguing counterpoint to Grange. It is unusual among high quality Australian red wines as it does not rely on any new oak. It was created in the early 1950s (first commercial vintage 1957) and gained a new lease of life in the 1990s as its quality and distinctive style became better understood.

While Grange is now seen as the quintessential Australian wine, John Davoren's work with St. Henri is of equal importance. Indeed both these wines set new standards for their day with St. Henri establishing an elegant, perfumed style based on fruit definition and maturation in old oak.

The aroma is fragrant, spicy and immediately recognisable as... Read more »

OVERSEAS PRODUCER OF THE YEAR: Mundus Vini Wine Awards 2009

Merlot is made with grapes sourced from the highest quality vineyards. The grapes are fermented on skins in contact with oak. Temperatures are kept high to ensure maximum colour and tannin extraction. The wine is bottled on the estate.

Merlot jumps from the glass with ripe plum aromas and a touch of that typical Aussie spice. Soft tannins complement the ripe fruit flavours and deliver a fine fruit-driven wine which is rich, soft and simply delicious.

Yellow Tail Merlot is created with a simple philosophy in mind, to make a great wine that everyone can enjoy, anytime, any place. This is a great Aussie red that can be enjoyed with antipasto, good times and great friends.

94/100: James Halliday

Deep bright red in colour. The nose shows aromas of fragrant dark plums and violets, attractive dark fruit bouquets with lifted notes of mint, florals and spice. A medium bodied wine with flavours of berries and plums. There are upfront, bright cassis fruit flavours of Cabernet, intense yet soft with further elements of cherry combining with the light oak flavours. Shiraz shows harmoniously integrated black pepper highlights, and the Merlot contributes softness and mint to the finish. Well defined fruit flavours, supple tannins and gentle acid structure complete the offering. Elegant and finely textured, this is a stylish wine with pleasing balance and integrity. Winemakers Notes

GOLD MEDAL: Perth Wine Show 2009

The fruit for this wine was sourced from premium Riesling vineyards in South Australia. Drought conditions continued in 2008, pushing vintage forward, beginning in mid to late February. Spring was frost free followed by an unseasonally cool February, allowing optimum ripening conditions for maximum flavour development with balanced acidity. However, the State struggled through one of the longest heat waves in South Australian history, with temperatures staying above 35 degrees Celcius for two weeks. Fortunately fruit picked before the heat spike arrived at the winery in excellent condition. Winemakers Notes

“Fresh, Vibrant, Fruity and Delicious”

"A textbook example of a cool-climate Shiraz from a warm year. Flavours & structure genetically aligned to its source Coonawarra." Penfolds Chief Winemaker - Peter Gago.

Created in 1962, Penfolds Bin 128 is a regional wine that reflects the unique climate and growing conditions of South Australia's Coonawarra district and the relatively elegant style of coolclimate Shiraz. From the 1980 vintage, French oak replaced American, highlighting the pepper, spice and floral characteristics that define this style. Since the mid-1980s, a greater attention has been paid to fruit ripeness, resulting in a wine that is fuller in style and structure.

"One of the first 2008 Penfolds reds to be unleashed:Sumptuous / Seamless / Substantial... yet charmingly unpretentious! Hard to separate the blend into its contributory varietal components - an entrapment / entanglement of Barossa fruits / soil / sun." Penfolds Chief Winemaker - Peter Gago.

The Barossa Valley was planted extensively with Shiraz, Mourvedre and Grenache by the early settlers. In the 1950s Penfolds started experimenting with blending Shiraz and the robust grape variety Mourvedre. It wasn't until 1995, in response to a growing international market for the highly perfumed wines of the Southern Rhone, that Penfolds introduced the 1992 vintage of the Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz Grenache Mourvedre. The wine was elevated to the Bin range with the 1998 Penfolds Bin 138. Sourced from old, low-yielding Barossa Valley vines,... Read more »

Penfolds, arguably Australia’s most famous winery, continues to perform at a high level under the leadership of Head Winemaker, Peter Gago. Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate

Penfolds Bin 28 is a showcase for warm-climate Australian Shiraz- ripe, robust and generously flavoured. First made in 1959, Bin 28 is named after the famous Barossa Valley Kalimna vineyard purchased by Penfolds in 1945 and from which the wine was originally sourced. Today, Bin 28 is a multi-region, multivineyard blend, with the Barossa Valley always well represented, providing a substantial proportion of the fruit for this vintage.

Australian Royalty (If there is such a thing!!)The Thomas Hyland Cabernet Sauvignon, a multi-district wine, draws fruit from Adelaide, Coonawarra, and Robe.

Whilst the style is essentially fruit-driven, Thomas Hyland Cabernet Sauvignon shows the classic varietal elements of ripe blackcurrant/cedar aromas and fine-grained tannins.

The nose shows sappy, varietal berried fruits with hints of nutmeg, background oak. The wine captures plum, mocha coffee and vanillin flavours. A firm palate, yet one that shows the balanced Penfolds oak maturation influence, and chunky, yet ripe tannins. Ready to drink now like other South Australian cabernet sauvignons.
